How To Deal With The Terrible Twos

Every parent goes through it, some even start earlier than others.
The random melt downs in public, the constant use of the word ‘NO!’ it’s all completely normal and part of your little ones growing up. The more we expect of young children, bringing them to restaurants and thinking they can control themselves in group settings like toddler classes, the more these behaviours seem to increase.

The random melt downs in public, the constant use of the word ‘NO!’ it’s all completely normal and part of your little ones growing up. The more we expect of young children, bringing them to restaurants and thinking they can control themselves in group settings like toddler classes, the more these behaviours seem to increase.

7 things you can do to help the terrible twos stage

  1. Consistency is key – Be consistent with your rules to help your toddler understand their limits
  2. Know when to use ‘no’ – If you say it too often your toddler will start to ignore you (trust me I’m a victim of this) choose real situations to say ‘no’ so that they understand what is and isn’t ok
  3. Look for tantrum triggers – if they decided to have a tantrum think about what could of caused it, use a distraction to help avoid a repeat
  4. Help them learn about consequences – after a tantrum explain to your child what happened and why it happened but keep it short and sweet so that they understand and make sure to praise them when they do something good so that they also learn about positive consequences
  5. Time out – if they repeat the same behaviour give them a short time out a lot of people choose a chair in a corner or on a step, explain to them why they are on time out and let them calm down
  6. Stay calm! – this one is very important as kids can pick up on energies! If they sense that you’re angry or upset with them it can make them worse! Keep a calm voice and try to set a good example of the behaviour you expect from them
  7. And last not not least and one of the most important! A balanced diet! This plays a big role in a child’s behaviour as we all know too much sugar can cause them to become hyper and lead to sudden urges of energy followed by a sudden low sometimes, encourage your child to eat 3 balanced meals a day with healthy snacks in between, this helps to keep a a calm mood throughout the day.
